My teaching style is very personal. I feel the need to truly know my students in order to best help them progress. I like for my students to be open about concerns and weaknesses in their abilities. I try to help them to analyze their own technique rather than have me tell them directly as this will help them to progress outside on the lesson and therefore more quickly. The greatest feeling is when a student comes in already having an idea of where they want the lesson to go for that day. Read More

Instruments: Trumpet
Like most trumpet teachers, I introduce the Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for Trumpet, an everything-you-need-to-know book that the student will use throughout their trumpet playing career. However, I also incorporate a variety of other method, solo, and duet books throughout lessons with an intent of maintaining variety, both of material and the methods that the material presents. Each lesson begins with reviews of fundamentals (long tones, breathing, lip slurs, etc.), sight-reading practice and instruction, and instruction on the solo piece that the student had been assigned the week before. I teach at the pace of the student, setting small achievable goals each lesson. I encourage students by acknowledging their progress and finding out what excites them. Students are encouraged to take what they've learned and participate in recitals, competitions, and any other musical opportunity they can find. I believe music should be taught as a means of personal expression, and so I also make sure to give students the tools they need to play in an expressive fashion, or even write their own music.
