My preferred methodology uses the Alfred series books, as well as the Faber Piano Adventure series as supplemental material. I use a combination of note names and intervals to teach reading skills. I also like to incorporate theory into every lesson. (Piano adventures, Alfred, Faber and Faber, ect) For piano we always do Theory , Technic, and go through a song book which will take you gradually through the levels and correspond the Theory and technique lessons.
