After college, I taught piano, guitar, and general music as a volunteer teacher in rural Malaysia for one year. In graduate school, I instructed two courses of ear training every semester. I started taking drum lessons at 12 years old and studied jazz and swing drumming early on. I was a percussion major in college then spent a few years in Austin Texas traveling with country, rock and blues bands. Have played on over 20 records. My approach to each student is individual and dependent on the experience of the student. For beginning students I focus almost exclusively on the fundamentals such as right and left hand independence, finger positioning, posture, and so on. Then I'll try introducing more complexity in increments. For adults, my method is the same as with children unless the adult in mind has demonstrated greater expertise on the instrument. I am highly enthusiastic and believe that every one learns at their own pace. Its never about how quickly you learn something, but about how well you learn it, even if it takes time. Nonetheless, my deepest passion at my core has always been music. I find music in every aspect of human life, as well as language. For my Applied Linguistics Masters thesis at the University of Oregon, I researched how one could use music to teach the suprasegmental aspects of the English language. I incorporated musical aspects and vocal techniques whenever possible into my EFL teaching.
