I use Christopher Parkening's Guitar method Book I to help my students learn the proper technique to play and for them to learn the notes in first position on the guitar and on the staff and beginner chord reading using chord diagrams at first and then showing them the chords on the staff. While piano instruction is certainly central to each lesson, I also spend time teaching music theory and ear training. I typically use Alfred's Basic Piano Library method books to achieve this well-rounded approach. My first contact with music was during my early childhood, when I took piano, guitar and violin lessons. Growing up, I was always active playing with several youth orchestras and various ensembles, ranging from classical to popular and folk music. I studied piano and composition at the California State University, Sacramento, where I had the opportunity to study with world class musicians and be part of cutting edge orchestras and choirs; during my college years I went on several tours with a choir, performing in venues such as Carnegie Hall, N.Y I currently perform as pianist and accompanist with Opera singers from the area, and also compose upon comissions. My approach to each student is individual and dependent on the experience of the student. For beginning students I focus almost exclusively on the fundamentals such as right and left hand independence, finger positioning, posture, and so on. Then I'll try introducing more complexity in increments. For adults, my method is the same as with children unless the adult in mind has demonstrated greater expertise on the instrument.
