I have received 15 years total of private instruction, including 4 years with Dr Lucy Scarbrough. I hold a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music.

Awards:

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors. I was awarded the Lucy Scarbrough Scholarship for two consecutive years. I was also a cofounder of the EPCC Music Society in which I served as Secretary, then Vice President. In 2018, I was a finalist in a local songwriting competition that was hosted by El Paso Downtown Management District (DMD).

Overview:

I have been teaching for over ten years and received private instruction myself growing up. Teaching music I'd an important part of my life. Learning music has the power to form many connections in the brain that can increase academic performance in school as well as develop a sense of expressivity. This is a concept I have kept constantly in mind throughout my teaching career. In addition to teaching, I have performed in both solo recitals and with ensembles. I have written numerous musical arrangements and original works.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for over ten years. I started out with just a handful of students, and have since grown to have a student base of over forty students. I have taught all ages and all levels. I have seen many beginning students become advanced students over a period of years. I work with several families and have enjoyed the experience of seeing younger siblings of students become my students as well. I put on recitals every year which typically bring in an audience of over one hundred people and are enjoyable for all.

METHODS USED

It is important to me that a student both enjoys and learns from their lessons. I strive to make lessons well-rounded. While piano instruction is certainly central to each lesson, I also spend time teaching music theory and ear training. I typically use Alfred's Basic Piano Library method books to achieve this well-rounded approach. The ultimate goal I maintain with students is to see them become independent and proficient learners, as well as to see them making music as a regular part of their lives.

LESSON STYLE

My lessons include a number of activities including piano instruction, ear training, theory, technique, and flash cards. They are all great learning tools for a well-rounded music education. I begin teaching sight reading almost from the first lesson. It is important for me as a teacher to see students make correlations between what they hear and see. Note memorization is also essential, but rather than simply using the standard acronyms for staff reading or focus on naming notes individually, I teach students early on to recognize the overall shape of the music they read
