As students progress, I focus on repertoire pieces issuing from the baroque, classical, romantic, and modern eras as to introduce students to the history of music. For younger students, I use a variety of material but very much like The Royal Conservatory Program. In the age of, "American Idol", "The Voice" and "Glee", everyone wants to be a star overnight. I like to use various method books since I believe every single one of them provide different pedagogical aspects. Depending on the style, genre that the student wants to learn, I make sure they have enough resources to practice themselves in their own home. For children, I try to keep it as light and fun so they won't burnout over the long journey of learning music. For teenagers and young adults I like to show the possibilities of the instrument and where they can be with persistence and for adults I'd like to guide and help them to find what they like the most and enjoy learning and playing. In 1995, I graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance. My favorite thing about teaching is that no two students are the same; and no two lessons with the same student are either! It is so important to establish a goal for a student to work towards, so that they know what they're practicing for. Not huge goals either that are months away, but goals that can be accomplished between each lesson. The best part of the job is seeing students get excited for music, and being able to grow in such a way that they're able to put their personality into their performances. Read More
