I believe in the importance of daily practice, both on repertoire (learned by ear) and on basic proficiency with the instrument - scales, chord-voicings, etc. I encourage students to try writing their own music, to listen adventurously, to seek performance opportunities, and, generally, to explore their own relationship to music - as a listener and maker - so that it can deepen and become ever more meaningful, ever more satisfying. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Alfred's Basic Piano Library or Piano Adventures Faber method. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. This could include jazz, classical or pop music. Having fun is a necessary condition for learning, so I try to cultivate a fun, laid-back, no-pressure atmosphere in my lessons. Every student has their own particular set of strengths and weaknesses, goals and time contraints. I take the time to understand what each student is looking to get out of their lessons and custom-tailor a unique lesson plan for each student accordingly.
