My teaching method consists of a focus on what the student is interested in, using what the student enjoys as a means of developing a comprehensive understanding of music and the guitar. I believe this method keeps students engaged with playing, and makes lessons and practicing fun, rather than feel like a chore. Lessons will deal with subjects such as scales, technique, and music theory. Although they may be tedious, I believe these things are important core elements to really understanding the guitar and music in general, and I would teach them in a way that would be fun for the student. I have taught with organizations such as 4/4 School of Music, Illumination Learning Studio, TakeLessons.com, Treehouse, and Music & Arts (where I led a string workshop in 2018). For my Master's thesis, I conducted a research study on improving minority representation in classical music education, which was published via Medium. I continue to evaluate music-related independent studies for Antioch University students, writing narrative evaluations to be included on their transcripts. In addition to my career, I currently serves as a Case Manager for the Youth Re-Engagement Program at Everett Community College, where I help young adults navigate the paths to their own dream careers. A student (whatever age) must be comfortable with their teacher, especially when working on Skype or Zoom. From the beginning I always teach a natural technique, to create an easy atmosphere so that a student will feel at ease about asking any questions that may arise. My method is to help students play the music they want to play, whether it's Miles Davis or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I like to start my lessons by working on a song of the students choice to spark their interest. From there, I move to focusing on the students needs technically, rhythmically and theoretically. Additionally, I have my students practice improvisation, in some capacity, at each lesson. For my beginning drum students, I use Mark Wessels "A Fresh Approach to the Snare Drum and Drum Set", Rod Morganstein's "drum set musician", and Mitchell Peters' "Developing Dexterity". For students that have a good grasp of the basics, I work through material that caters to their specific interests (jazz, rock, latin, West-African, orchestral/school band, or marching percussion). I feel all students have the ability to actualize their creativity through the of study of a musical instrument. My students are given small musical challenges each lesson which will enhance their sense of accomplishment. Lessons are assigned to the student's current level. The lesson material will be internalized after repeated repetitions. To understand and perform a simple lessons leads to a profound knowledge of an aspect of music.
