I use my students' natural strengths to help them understand the aspects of music that come less naturally to them. For younger students I allow them to explor the instrument while showing them how to hold it and play. For older students I teach simple songs as well as scales and arpeggios. When it comes to teaching voice, there is no one way of doing so. Each child learns differently and each child has a different instrument, and it is most important that that be figured out first. I will generally start out with well known songs sung by ear, and then depending on the students level help them to learn to read music. In my lessons, I work hard to create a routine that best fits the students needs. This typically means that many of my students are not following a specific lesson plan or standard routine. Starting out, I stress fundamentals and warm-ups to help the students create a solid grasp of the instrument, before making the move towards solo repertoire. Of course, the older and more experience the student is will influence the difficulty of the routine, however, I always make sure that goals that I have set for a student are within reach. Read More
