It is equally important to learn music from method books and through sonic exploration; I have personally learned a lot from books and while "noodling."When teaching trumpet (all skill levels), I use books including Arban's Complete Conservatory Method, Clarke's Technical Studies, and Schlossber's Daily Drills and Technical Studies. For guitar and bass guitar (beginner through intermediate), I start with Hal Leonard's Play Bass Today series. I teach beginner piano with the Bastien series and Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course.I also have a library of alternate method books and additional materials including excerpts, solos, duets, and play-alongs. While students arrive to my lessons with an array of different skills, I always make sure they have the fundamentals of music down; such as keeping a consistent rhythm and ensuring the notes choices are harmonically pleasing and intentional based on the piece. Making sure the student is learning what they enjoy learning as well as what I feel are the necessary next steps to improve their skills are essential in the learning process no matter what age the student is. I have had the pleasure of studying with some of the finest musicians in the world, but, this pairing did not necessarily make me a better player, it was taking what they gave me and utilizing those ideas, turning them into artistry. I first started teaching group lessons at a yoga studio where I was employed in the Spring of 2018. The popularity of those lessons was limited, but I found when I had students I enjoyed engaging with them one on one and discussing my craft. I quit my job at the yoga studio and committed my time to marketing myself as a guitar teacher instead. Since then I have been teaching lessons out of my South Philadelphia home and practice studio as well as online to students of all ages, generally beginners, but also occasionally more experienced players. I have little formal experience, but I believe that instrumental to the success of any aspiring musician is encouragement and guidance. I have been giving casual lessons to friends and acquaintances for years, and my experiences have taught me that virtuosity alone cannot teach; one must be able to articulate the methods and processes that have been in place for years in one's own musical practice to someone approaching it fresh. I use positive reinforcement to help students get better at playing the guitar. I make the student feel comfortable learning and make the lessons fun. I give them plenty of chance to show me what they know. I have them playing notes and chords in no time. I start out with simple chords and move on to more advanced chords. Read More

I have found that a simultaneous combination of book-guided learning and practical application is often most enjoyable for a student (and teacher). Learning the fundamentals is certainly important. Using this knowledge to learn pieces of songs and understand how the songs are constructed keeps things fresh for the student and reinforces the lessons better than book learning alone. I typically start beginners with the Mel Bay series of guitar instruction books. Read More
