For a beginning student on guitar, I have them learning notes from a Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, or Alfred starter book. All these books are great, but I believe it depends on the individual student and how they learn. I also teach tab to beginners. I feel it is important to read tabs these days as well as notes. My goal as a teacher is to avoid any type of dogmatic "one size fits all" curriculum.  I always want to know what music the student enjoys and build my lesson plans based on their tastes.  Chords can be physically challenging for beginners so I like to work with single-note melodies early on so that the student isn't quickly discouraged.  Learning chords becomes the medium-term goal.  As for the long-term, I will then use specific songs as examples for how music theory works in the context of their favorite bands. My favorite way to learn is my working towards a song that I love. I always ask my students what specific song they want to play, and then structure my lessons around the building blocks of that song: chords, rhythm, melody, etc. I understand that a lot of guitarists do not care much for the nitty gritty of music theory (especially for rock and such), and while I am admittedly a huge theory nerd I am willing to overlook theory for a more feel-based approach.
