I had been teaching piano since high school, after which I chose to study music at a conservatory. I have been teaching consistently since my graduation and have had varied experiences. I have taught students from four years to adulthood, at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. I always aim to bring out the best in every student. It is always very important to me, to listen to the student and observe their learning styles, in the initial classes. Read More

The first step of teaching an instrument to anyone is accurately finding out how experienced they are with the instrument. As far as beginners go, when I was taught piano I used Alfred's Basic Piano library, among other similar books. I felt nothing was forced or unnecessary with those books, and it gives a good opportunity to set a nice goal-oriented pace with moving on up in skill level all the way to the upper intermediate level. I really covered this in the above information,so continuing in more detail,it really depends on each individual student, their level of ability and age that determine the course of study. It also depends on the instrument. Some instruments like piano, violin or viola, books are more practical because the music is notated. With most fretted instruments, music is written in tableture which was originally used for the lute and brought back i think in the 1970s.Its easier than reading music and is more practical for those instruments. I introduce double stop positioning, bar positions, forms for 12 bar and 1-4-5- chord patterns in different styles of music (this can range from Beethoven to Jimi Hendrix). I then move to introducing songs than have the same core chords, but in different sequences, so students can see broader applications. I also have an favorite tool of mine that especially helps with theory -- a wheel that has the circle of 5ths carved into it, with patterns and relations between the keys carved into an inner wheel on it as well. The best thing about teaching is when my students get frustrated at some concept or technique and I am able to show them a simple and easy solution to the problem. This usually lights up my student's faces and helps them get better not only at their instruments, but also at problem solving. I always try to reward those students who are able to answer music theory questions or those that complete their assignments. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music. It's important that each of my students progress at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
