My music teaching experience goes back to 2013 when I taught English at a public school in Tampa, Florida. I've always been a guitar fanatic and my students knew this, so one student, Robert, asked me if I'd like to give him one-on-one lessons on guitar. Besides showing my friends techniques and certain songs, this was the first official student that I had, and I've had several students since that time. Read More

I started teaching when I was in high school just to make a little bit of extra money, but I found out that I really enjoyed it. I also taught while in college. Upon graduating SUNY New Paltz I started teaching full time and supplemented this with gigs. By having up to 60 students a week I was able to work with people of various ages, abilities, and interests. I have also had the good fortune to have taught at The National Guitar Workshop, SUNY New Paltz, and Rockland Community College, as well as privately. Read More

I am a New York City based songwriter, artist, arranger, producer, and educator, most often occupying the space between R&B and Jazz. My music is influenced by artists ranging from Stevie Wonder to Erykah Badu to John Coltrane. I went to Boston in 2015 to study Musical Theatre at the Boston Conservatory. There, I began songwriting and discovered a new passion leading me to change course in my education and continue my studies at Berklee College of Music in 2017. Read More

I do believe in the fundamentals of music and ultimately, no matter what you hear, learning music is not re-inventing the wheel. There is technique, reading music and understanding the basics of how the particular instrument works. I like the Essential Elements for Guitar or bass for guitarists and bassists and Alfred's Piano method books. Ted Reed's Guide to Syncopation is a good drum book. Ultimately I like to get the know the student as much as I can as soon as I can so I can help them get to what they want as soon as possible with a few laughs along the way. Read More

It is a great book for all ages and covers the necessary beginner to intermediate topics that build a solid understanding of guitar and music fundamentals. It presents technical, rudimentary, and musical aspects in an easy to understand format. I have other books that I pull examples from for topics being studied as well. I often create my own custom lessons for which the students and I work on together to create a lesson plan that can be viewed via tablet or computer, or printed out in PDF form. Read More

A lesson with me equals half of the allotted time being used to learn good technique (i.e., learning healthy vocal habits, singing vocalises, learning to read music, playing scales, etc.) and the other half of the time singing and playing repertoire. The repertoire includes both pieces chosen by Kathy (always approved by the student) which excite and inspire the students particular musical tastes while providing a new challenge in technique to be conquered, and also pieces brought in by the student; for example, if a student is working on music for a specific performance, etc., or if they just really like a piece and want to learn how to play or sing it, I am always ready and willing to lend a hand and an ear! Teaching for me works best on an individual level. Students work on different levels and languages concerning music, and you have to be able to adapt to them. Some people might understand everything from the get go, some students need graphic support, some student need to learn song to understand what they are doing. The important part of being an instructor is not the actual material to be taught but being able to clear the way for the student to learn and teach himself, as well as providing a direction towards understanding the instrument and music through the taste and necessities of each student.
