If you're a beginner, you were put in a beginning class. this makes it very difficult for students to advance quickly because they aren't playing music with people who are more advanced than them. I make sure the students have the ability to play the instrument before they learn a ton of theory, because knowing how the wrritten form of music work without being able to play them is recipe for frustration. I encourage all my students to learn the basic rudiments of music including music theory, sight-reading and playing ‘by ear’. I recommend Mel Bay’s “Children’s Guitar Method” and Hal Leonard’s “Guitar Method Book 1” for school age children. However, many of my students have decided to concentrate on learning basic theory involving chords and scales to develop ability to play ‘by ear’.
