As an educator, I believe it is important to continue school music instruction into private flute lessons. I like to communicate with a child's school music teacher in the beginning of flute lessons, so that I can keep music terminology consistent for students, as well as reinforce concepts they're already learning (while expanding musically of course!). I like to have students keep a lesson packet where progress is documented, along with a journal--I find that reflecting for five minutes after a practice session (things that went well, things you need help on, questions), are important tools when striving for success. For absolute beginners, I start by explaining different parts of the flute. I first work on the headjoint to make sure the student can produce a good sound with good air without assembling all parts together. After a student gets a good sound, I let them assemble the flute and start teaching one note at a time. I usually start with Essential Elements for Flute Level 1. If a student is more advanced, I use Rubank Intermediate/Advanced Books, and start learning more pieces. Read More
