Over the past ten years, I have had the privilege of working with students of all ages, and have been on faculty at the Manhattan School of Music Summer Program, the Larchmont Music Academy, All-Island Music, and an adjunct teaching instructor New York University’s Steinhardt School of Music. I am originally from San Diego, CA, and began playing the flute in my elementary school band. While growing up in San Diego I served as the principal flutist of the San Diego Youth Symphony, and played with local community orchestras. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. For beginning students, I start with the Douglas Steensland Flute Student books. For intermediate and advanced students, I focus on memorization of scales in addition to working out of Taffanel and Gaubert's 17 Daily Exercises, etude books (i.e., Melodious and Progressive series), and standard flute repertoire. My goal as a teacher is to help the students improve their overall musicianship, while also addressing each students personal goals. For beginner students young and old I start out with Rubank Elementary Method for saxophone. This book provided a solid foundation in basic theory and reading that lead to musical literacy. From there I go towards the basics of improvisation in the blues while continuing with technique books on the side. Once this foundation is in place I begin to encourage the student to explore music they're passionate about and start with the basics of solo transcription and more advanced improvisation. Read More
