I was born and raised in Australia. I graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2000, and have since performed in a number of musicals and theatre productions in Oz, including Oklahoma, Les Miserables and The Vagina Monologues (2007 ITA Best Actress Award). As a critically acclaimed cabaret performer, I toured the cabaret and festival circuits in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth before moving to NYC last year. I am an Alumni of the International Cabaret Conference at Yale, won last year’s Annual Broadway Spring Festival Shana Farr Cabaret Competition and have since performed solo cabarets at the Metropolitan Room and The Duplex. I will ask you what types of music interest you, what you expect to get from the lessons and the guitar in general, and construct a lesson plan just for you. I focus on "practical application", meaning I don't clutter your notebook with sheet music and boring terms to memorize. Everyone loves music, its why we listen to it on the way to work, when we relax or just for the fun of it. Getting to explore the amazing world of music is a gift and I believe learning an instrument should be fun and stimulating just as music is. Secondly the lessons should be challenging without being overwhelming. I was first introduced to viola through the Suzuki method, and so I am extremely familiar and comfortable with that method and have mostly taught that method as well. If the student is in school, as mentioned above, I will usually start by seeing what they need to learn and have been doing/learning there, and work from that point. For students more advanced or wanting to learn outside of the Suzuki method, I have many "starter" books at my home that I am happy to teach from for learning notes, rhythms, and other short songs, and will suggest etude books and scale books, such as Carl Flesch.
