I have found from my past lessons with music teachers that acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, which will help a student feel more eager to learn. By helping inspire a student, I can successfully change my instruction to their wants and needs. I will try my best to help any student reach any goal they might have, because as corny as it may sound, I believe everyone can reach any goal they really set their mind to. Read More

It's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Sometime I would bring my soprano or tenor saxophone with me and create music with a student by trying to show him how music works. Read More

As an educator, I believe it is important to continue school music instruction into private flute lessons. I like to communicate with a child's school music teacher in the beginning of flute lessons, so that I can keep music terminology consistent for students, as well as reinforce concepts they're already learning (while expanding musically of course!). I like to have students keep a lesson packet where progress is documented, along with a journal--I find that reflecting for five minutes after a practice session (things that went well, things you need help on, questions), are important tools when striving for success. I am passionate about teaching music to all ages and all levels. I love teaching beginners, I love teaching professionals. All teaching excites me because I am learning alongside my students. It's important to me that students learn how to practice, to have a part in selecting their music and feel excited about their lessons. I have performed at national and international performance venues, both in chamber music and orchestra work, where I have also been a concerto soloist several times. Read More

Daryl began playing flute at the age of 11, as part of a middle school band class. His band instructor noticed his innate talent, and began to prepare him for studies at the Music Advancement Program at the Juilliard School. During this two year program, Daryl studied flute with Jayn Rosenfeld, played in chamber ensembles and orchestra, while also studying music history, music theory, and ear training. Daryl also made his concerto debut playing Vivaldi's "Il Gardellino" in the final year of the program. Read More

My teaching style is flexible based on the individuals needs. Some students require a firm approach whereas others are better off with a gentler one. I pride myself on my ability to connect with students and find what motivates them. My approach heavily relies on the historical pedagogy of every instrument I teach while also implementing improvisation and free play to excite and motivate. My students are strongly encouraged to attend concerts, master classes, and listen to live music as much as possible. Read More

For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. Read More
