For adults, I would continue using these books but at a higher level with supplemental material on the side, which may include solo repertoire appropriate for them and Hanon's Virtuoso Pianist exercises (a few, not all). For voice students, I try to find out what it is they are interested in singing; I am comfortable with all genres but it should be noted that I am classically trained and can work more easily and comfortably for those wanting to sing classical music, musical theater, and church related music.  A student must enjoy what they are working on in order to progress. I individualize my teaching methods for each student based on their ability level. After I assess the ability level, I find level-appropriate method books, scale studies, etudes, tone exercises, sight reading, and solo repertoire. I use method books that I am personally familiar with and like, but am open to looking for new, exciting options. I make sure that the students feels comfortable with materials, but is also challanged so that they may progress in their skills. Read More

I believe in teaching music that the student wants to learn, whether that's the latest pop song or basic music theory which can be applied to any style. For my piano students, I prefer Alfred's piano curriculum. For my guitar students, I use Hal Leanord books. For my voice students, we work on whatever songs they want to learn or have assigned to them for a performance. For flute, I like Rubank method, but am open to other preferred methods as well. I use many different methods, and I do not limit myself to the following list. I believe in a warm-up for all instruments, so each lesson will start with one (scales, long tones, etc.) For flute, I often start with either the book that comes with the rental book, old band books, etc. then I venture off into etude books, long tone books, and solos that promote individual development. Voice students will start with warm up exercises that help them find the placement of the voice and often, depending on why they are taking voice, there is a song that I pick and a song they pick.
