2009- Songwriting Program at CMC
I am a singer/songwriter who enjoys the process of creating a song from start to finish. I also am a studio singer and love the experience of being in the studio recording my own original music. I graduated in 2009 with a contemporary music degree that provided a well-rounded musical education. My favorite part of my educational experience was the time I spent at the Contemporary Music Center at Martha's Vineyard for a special off-campus artist program. At the CMC I was mentored by a professional Nashville songwriter who gave real-life experience of the music industry.
I have twelve years of post-graduate experience teaching individual music lessons to kids of all ages and adults as well. I have also taught music in Montessori school so am familiar with all different learning styles. I am also comfortable teaching kids with special needs, especially ASD. They tend to be very good at music lessons because of the focused attention I give them. I keep my teaching style conversational and fun, at a pace the student can handle. I also keep them accountable for their practicing goals and encourage small amounts of practice daily.
I believe in teaching music that the student wants to learn, whether that's the latest pop song or basic music theory which can be applied to any style. For my piano students, I prefer Alfred's piano curriculum. For my guitar students, I use Hal Leanord books. For my voice students, we work on whatever songs they want to learn or have assigned to them for a performance. For flute, I like Rubank method, but am open to other preferred methods as well. I teach all my students the basics of reading music & also pop music theory (scales, chords, progressions etc.)
My goal is for my students to love music and enjoy the process of learning and growing and reaching their personal goals as a musician. Whether that's just playing for fun or preparing them for a recital or coffee shop gig or professional studio recording experience or preparing their part for the musical group that they participate in; I have helped my students with all these things. I strive to have a positive teaching style by focusing on their strengths and helping them achieve their personal goals.
