In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. My teaching experience dates back to my high school days when I began teaching private lessons part time, and started a program for underprivileged students to have group lessons and perform throughout the community. I also have five years of experience teaching middle school and high school music in public schools. I love to see my students enter various competitions and perform in recitals. For beginner students, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, since it is commonly the book used in middle school bands. From there, I transition the student to solo repertoire by finding/transcribing music that the student enjoys before introducing appropriate more formal solo repertoire. I also begin teaching students basic music theory and slowly start to introduce more advanced techniques, such as vibrato and double-tonguing.
