I am very passionate about developing a lifelong love of music in students of all ages! In 2012, I graduated from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University with my Master's of Music degree in Conducting, and in 2008 I graduated from the Western Carolina University Honors College with my Bachelor's degree in Music Education. I have had amazing experiences in my high school, college, and adult life performing with and learning from musicians all over the world, and I love helping my students to have even greater experiences of their own!
My teaching experience dates back to my high school days when I began teaching private lessons part time, and started a program for underprivileged students to have group lessons and perform throughout the community. I also have five years of experience teaching middle school and high school music in public schools. I love to see my students enter various competitions and perform in recitals. I am always looking to work with new students of all ages, regardless of past musical experience!
I typically begin with an age appropriate method book, supplemented by customized materials I create for each student. The initial focus is on FUNdamentals and understanding basic music theory. As soon as appropriate, I begin to incorporate solo literature selected by the student as well as provide assistance with any school band/orchestra assignments. Lessons are a great way to explore ALL different types of music!
My number one goal is to help develop a lifelong passion for music in students of all ages! I encourage each student to work at his or her own best pace by working together to set SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time oriented) goals for each week, month, etc., and then celebrate with the student when the goals are reached! It is important to me to customize my teaching to each student's individual learning styles, needs, and desires!
