Lessons will feature a warm-up period, followed by review of material from previous lessons, playing of new material, and wrap-up with sightreading and assignments for next lesson. Students are often encouraged to self-evaluate and set their own level of rigor. I believe in a collaborative approach that involves questioning students and having students ask questions of themselves. More than having students be able to perform technically, I want students to have an understanding of music and their instrument intimately, from their own awareness, rather than rote explanation or practice. I have enjoyed teaching and helping students of all ages for 24 years in achieving their goals in learning to play their instruments. Educated at Columbus State University with a Music Education degree, I teach many instruments including piano, guitar, including Classical style, banjo, saxophone, clarinet and flute. If you would like to start on the trumpet or trombone, I can help you as well. I specialize in working with the novice musician, giving them a solid foundation in instrumental technique and musical knowledge. Read More

I generally start off my beginners with A.C. Peterson's Rubank Elementary Method or Bruce Pearson's Standard of Excellence. After they develop the basic skills, I will move the student onto Robert Cavally's Melodious and Progressive Studies etude book. From there, I may introduce solo repertoire into the curriculum. I also find it important to play duets with the students to train the ear in a "proper" tone and intonation. Read More

My teaching experience goes back to my high school days, where I began to teach private lessons part time ten years ago. Since then, I have been consistently been teaching students in private studios. I encourage regular practice on a consistent schedule and motivate my students on a daily basis. I also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoying playing instruments. Read More

My methodological procedures are determined solely on the level of the student and their performance ability. Oftentimes I tailor lessons that ive created in my past to create lesson plans for individual students. I oftentimes use action research methods in helping me determine whether or not the teaching method that is being used in the lesson is effective for the student receiving lessons. For larger groups or smaller ensembles I create lessons around whatever the end goal is and/or the performance requirements. Read More

Always start where the student is, and take them from there. Always encourage and inspire students to be better than yesterday. Progress, no matter the amount, is progress. Take your own pace. If you have a specific deadline, for example a college audition, you will have to commit to practicing more than usual and we will create a plan of action. Also, I do write letters of recommendation. Celebrating daily practice to turn goals into accomplishments, I love seeing my students learn, harness their determination to do more, learn more, and I love seeing my students happy with their self-worth. Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet
For beginning students I teach out of the Rubank Elementary Method books. These books are most comprehensive for beginning students. As the student progresses I begin introducing them to solo repertoire, scales studies, and jazz improvisation. My approach is much different with adult students. I ask them what are their musical goals and from there I can create a curriculum based on adult students needs and wants. My teaching method works for all students, no matter the age or musical level. Read More
