I started teaching violin about 15 years ago. A few years later I started teaching viola and cello. When I got to CSULB I started learning all the band instruments. I did some coaching for several years at middle schools and high schools. After that I bought a lot a wind instruments and started to teach wind instruments privately. Playing and teaching each instrument is like entering a different world. Each instrument is special in its own way. Read More

I like to challenge my students to be the best they can be as musicians. For the serious candidates, inspiration is a necessity! On top of lessons they are encouraged to grow by listening to other musicians learning from them. I value the teacher and student relationship. Most of the time I feel out what the client would do well with. (A lot of guidance or a lot of freedom vice versa) I see myself operate more as an accountability coach in my teaching. Read More

Ever since I was a kid, I had a passion for mentoring and tutoring. Nothing makes me feel as fulfilled as a long day of teaching, having fun with my students and helping them make progress both in their musical studies and development as people. As a performer, my career encompasses anything from classical and jazz concerts to musical theater productions and studio recording sessions. I am constantly looking for new ways to contribute to my craft and find new outlets for performing. Read More

While all of my students study the same fundamental musical principles, I believe that every lesson should be as unique as every person. That's why I always create new, customized lesson plans and provide individualized materials for all of my students. In my experience, this approach is most effective at increasing the student's musical ability—and it's a lot more fun! Rather than just going cover to cover through a method book, we'll keep things interesting and fresh by playing music games (especially with younger students), composing our own music, listening to new artists, and working on pieces that are requested by the student. Instruments: Saxophone Flute
I have been playing the saxophone for 20+ years and have had the good fortune to study with some of my jazz heroes. These lessons have not only taught me countless valuable lessons about the instrument and improvisation, but have also shown me how to teach. Spending time with many teachers with various teaching styles has helped me identify the qualities in a teacher that I find most effective, allowing me to incorporate them into my own teaching. YEARS 1-2: BEGINNER LEVEL Foundation-building happens here. Each student learns approximately 30-40 pieces throughout the year, and participates in 2-3 recitals and possibly an adjudicated event. Students finish 1 theory/activity book per year on average. Practice expectation is 10-20 minutes per day, 5-6 days per week. Student music requests are encouraged. YEARS 3-4: LATE BEGINNER LEVEL Continued foundation-building and more creativity start to happen in these two years. Each student learns approximately 20-30 longer and more challenging pieces throughout the year, and participates in 3-4 recitals and possibly an adjudicated event. Read More

I had to create "wiggle room" for following his joy whilst remaining instructionally relevant. Other students require more structure, have different musical passions, etc. so I follow that accordingly and when required draft precise, singular goal oriented lesson plans. Humbly though, I would say that Adam taught me to improvise on an a higher level than I'd ever been asked to or thought possible, which for a jazz musician is really saying something. Read More
