Overview:

I'm an enthusiastic music instructor based in Los Angeles, CA who loves sharing my love and passion for music with students. My principle instrument is the flute which I have been playing for over 17 years. I was born and raised in the province of Cienfuegos, Cuba where I began my formal music education at the Elementary School of Music Alejandro Garcia Caturla at the age of twelve. In 2010, I graduated from the Music Conservatory Amadeo Roldan where I obtained my Bachelors' degree in Arts along with distinguished recognitions. In 2013, I decided to move to the United States and broadened my musical scope to include not only Classical music but also popular genres such as Latin jazz, Traditional Cuban music and folklore. Aside from performing, I am also a music teacher who has been involved in various educational works, including Caesura Youth Orchestra, a non-profit organization that strives to give underprivileged children a better life through the learning of music. Simultaneously, I am musically active in studio recordings, TV shows, musicals, tours throughout the United States, and performances in popular clubs. In 2020, I graduated with a Masters Degree in Music Education as I continues to prepare myself to become a certificated music educator.

EXPERIENCE

Teaching is one of my passions in music and I have a long-extending background in this discipline with almost 20 years of music experience as a performer and over 6 years as a teacher. In July 2020, I graduated with a Master of Arts in Teaching from Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I have also had the opportunity to hold several professional roles by teaching music education privately and in a classroom and have been fortunate enough to work with all the age ranges. I am a teacher who believes in the power of music education for all-round development and how it can positively impact lives. Teaching music has really empowered me to master my craft so that I can teach it better and I hope that through it, I can inspire my students to realize their musical potential, foster good habits such as consistency, hard work, discipline and so on. My ultimate goal as a teacher is to motivate my students to always have high standards and strive for greatness. Whether they want to pursue a career in music, enter a competition or create their own original material, my job is to help them unlock their potential. That's what will make me feel accomplished as a teacher.

METHODS USED

For beginning students who are children, I usually start with how to make a sound on the flute by practicing only the headjoint for the first week to help them develop the muscles in the lips and help to keep the aperture small. Once they feel confident with the headjoint, I would then teach them how to hold the flute properly and have a correct posture when playing. As soon as the student has progressed on these fundamentals, I will introduce them to the first notes on the flute which are typically B,A and G above the staff. These are the least difficult notes on the flute to produce a sound. As the student advance further into the lessons, I will start implementing repertoire that is suitable to their level. This is my favorite part of the learning journey since we get to have fun playing music and I get to share my joy of music with them. And that is the real art of teaching!

LESSON STYLE

As a music instructor, it is important for me to create a safe learning space for the students, where they are not afraid to fail. Understand that it is okay to make mistakes and trying our best is the most important attitude towards success. For this, it is viral to always set realistic goals based on skills, timeframe and level of motivation to pave the road for success. As a flute player, I understand the challenges that comes with learning the instrument. Therefore, I will always have supportive and encouraging words to say to my students, I will pray every little success they have and show enthusiasm for their progress.

When I took my first lesson with Ms. Rachel, she walked me through music theory as well as the technique of the flute. I had very little knowledge about this instruments but little but little I started to become more confident. She is an amazing teacher but she also insanely skilled at playing. I highly recommend her as a teacher.
