I was raised in Ohio where I spent my early years dancing. However, as I matured I realized I didn't enjoy dancing so much as I love the music I was moving too. I started on the clarinet in middle school and continued through high school. In college I picked up other instruments as I studied to become a classroom music teacher. For beginning students, I place a large emphasis on the fundamentals i.e. scales, chord progressions etc. I also start them on solo pieces and like them to choose the pieces they are working on. I believe that if they choose their repertoire then they will have greater love and enthusiasm for the music. I also encourage them to push beyond what they think they can do. I have been teaching the flute on and off over the past ten years when my full-time career has permitted. I have worked with children, teenagers and adults. I am encouraging, fun, supportive and patient while also challenging my students to give their personal best to their music studies. Like any instrument, the flute requires consistent regular practice in order to gain foundational skills and to progress. I taught music for several years in college as part of arts mentorship programs conducted in Trenton. In general I believe that music education should be inclusive and accessible to people of all backgrounds and skill levels, and I also believe strengthening foundational technique by encouraging regular practice of scales and exercises is very important.
