Then, I will determine the progress of the students by assigning them with appropriate tasks to practice plus music theory. I encourage my students to focus on listening to the sounds they produce and if the sound is of the wrong essence, then I will work with them to find a way to correct the sound. As a form of encouragement, I never hesitate to compliment my students whenever they make accomplishments or strides in progress. I use beginning guitar books such as Hal Leonard that show the basic layout of the guitar and are an introduction to reading. Also chord books, books on scales, jazz methods, fake books, classical books and such. I like to teach my own style,being creative and going beyond basics. My favorite time in any lesson is the "ah ha" moment. Its that moment when a student realizes a concept that they previously struggled with. For me, that is the goal of teaching. For younger students it can be the first time playing twinkle twinkle alone. For older students it could be figuring out how to do a spiccato bow stroke. Its different every time, but it is important to recognize those accomplishments and use them as stepping stones to the next big achievement. Read More
