Overview:
I start playing the piano when I was 5 and started playing oboe at the age of 8 in Guanran Catholic Music Elementary School in Taiwan- a school that taught music theory, ear-training, aural skills, music history, choir, and orchestra, in addition to regular academic classes. Throughout my life, I have performed as a solo and collaborative pianist, instrumental and vocal accompanist, oboist, choral singer, and conductor in various venues in US, Taiwan, China, and Italy. As a solo pianist, I had debuts at the most prestigious concert venues in US, including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center of Performing Arts in NYC and Kennedy Center of Performing Arts in Washington DC. Currently, I am teaching and performing in Peninsula area.
EXPERIENCE
One of the most enjoyable things about teaching is to learn from my students and learn to harmoniously interact with different personalities. My teaching experience dates back to my high school junior year in California, as I began teaching private piano and oboe lessons at students' homes, and have been consistently teaching one-on-one lessons until currently. I started with teaching children and younger teenagers, and then began to teach adults during my undergraduate years. From 2015 until recently, I had experience teaching in music schools in NYC and the Bay Area in California. As of 2019 Fall, I quit my teaching jobs at music schools in order to develop my own teaching styles and create various performance opportunities for my students with restrictions, Currently, I teach in a Kawaii piano store, an after school piano program, student's home, and in a private studio, and teach around 45 students per week!
METHODS USED
For beginning students (children and adults), I typically start with Alfred's Piano Lesson and Recital books. Before starting to read the music score, I seriously train their technique and hand/body posture. After students become fluent on note-reading and able to read and play basic rhythmic patterns properly, I will begin introduce simple solo repertoires and etudes such as Czerny studies, Bach minuets, Burgmuller studies, sonatinas, and simple classical repertoires in Keith Snell books. If a student is not interested in classical music, then I may introduce some film music, popular songs, or jazz music in solo piano versions. I am pretty open-minded to provide options for students and allow students to pick the repertoires they are interested. For advanced students, I may assign one or two pieces from each stylistic period (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, and Contemporary) to prepare them for a full recital program. I introduce some local or international competitions or more performance opportunities if students are interested. The lesson length and the amount of homework will depend on student's age, level, learning goal, and time they can commit for piano. My private students have opportunities to participate in up to six recitals per year! I highly encourage all the students, even beginners, to participate in all the recital I offer!
LESSON STYLE
What I feel the most rewarding of teaching is to see my students grow musically and develop a passion for music. "Consistent" and "productive" practice are the key points I emphasize for all the students. I personally believe that being able to "see the result" can help students gain confidence about their potential so students will be eager to challenge more in order to accomplish a higher level. In order to promote effectiveness, it is essentially important that students understand what to improve and what the best method is for practice. During the lesson, besides verbal explanation, I demonstrate by playing and ask students if they can hear the difference. I may use metaphor, abstract theory, cards, body movements depend on each individual. Once students overcome a challenge, students may acknowledge accomplishment and gain desire to progress. After each lesson, I would clearly tell my students my expectation for the next lesson. Students and I would also set the goals together for the next lesson. This would motivate students and it ensures that students have ideas what to practice and are confident that they are capable achieving something we both expect.

Absolutely LOVED taking lessons with her! I started as a beginner, and I advanced very quickly with great guidance from Tammy. She is so thoughtful, patient, and thorough in her teaching methodology. With her high-quality instruction, I enjoyed and looked forward to every lesson. Taking lessons from Tammy was definitely one of the highlights of my university experience!

Tammy is an incredible piano teacher. Throughout my life, I have studied piano under six highly qualified piano teachers, and Tammy stands out as the best piano teacher I've ever had. She has a magical way of explaining subtle technique improvements, which allows the proper techniques to sink in and stick. She invents these perfectly fitting and beautiful metaphors that make difficult changes much simpler and easy to accomplish. Another thing about our lessons, is that I feel minimal performance anxiety playing for her. I have felt anxious playing for previous teachers, especially when I haven't practiced enough. But Tammy always makes me feel calm and happy to learn. I have seen the most improvement in my piano while studying under Tammy. She's awesome and don't miss out on a chance to study with her!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
