PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE My teaching experience started in 2007 with teaching young kids from our youth meeting in church. Now I am teaching in my home studio in Belleville, NJ since 2016. With more than 10 years experience, I love working with new students of all ages. I use a curriculum developed by Mrs, Irina Gorin which specialize in kids from 4-6 years. Joey R. is a Brooklyn-based saxophonist and educator from Riverwoods, IL. He found his love for music at the age of nine while hearing John Coltranes monumental solo on Giant Steps. It was in this moment that Joey began his lifelong journey in sound. Joeys years in school were fruitful; he shared the stage with Patti Austin, Shelly Berg, Gloria Estefan, Alan Ferber, Quincy Jones, Brian Lynch, Barry Manilow, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Charlie Watts, and John Williams. I started teaching private students since my college years in Taiwan. When I moved to New York and pursued my degree in piano performance, I found that my passion is not as a performer, but an educator. I have noticed the need of good music education in America, and I strongly believe that we need to encourage the next generation to get close to music. Therefore, I turned to my interest to school music. Read More

My teaching style matches the personality of the student. I can vary my lesson from high energy to calm and sensitive. As an previous elementary school music teacher to 3000 students, I have the ability to read a student and find the most effective way to teach immediately. When it is appropriate, I enjoy teaching in the Orff-Schulwerk approach to music education, which means making music through movement, speech, play, and creativity. Read More

For beginning students, I start with the Douglas Steensland Flute Student books. For intermediate and advanced students, I focus on memorization of scales in addition to working out of Taffanel and Gaubert's 17 Daily Exercises, etude books (i.e., Melodious and Progressive series), and standard flute repertoire. My goal as a teacher is to help the students improve their overall musicianship, while also addressing each students personal goals. While I have listed books I work out of with students, I am always interested in hearing what the student would like to play and work on those pieces/songs as well. Read More

Teaching is the best decision I have ever made in my entire career. When students first start I always ask them what their goals are and what they would like to work on. My goal for them is to watch them grow into the best musicians they can be because I see so much potential in them. For band students, during marching band camp, I asked my students to play what they could and gave them feedback afterward including suggestions on how to correct bad habits early on. Read More
