I started teaching in 2009 in Mississippi. I taught 6th grade band (beginner), 7th grade band, and high school. I taught in Mississippi for 5 years and just recently moved to Tennessee. While teaching, I've given private lessons to some of my students after school and to some students who did not attend my school. I always encourage doing a recital, entering competitions, and continuing on to college playing their instrument. I love motivating students and challenging them to be the best and nothing less. Realistic goals are a encouraging so they don't lose confidence in starting toohard or working on something that is not hard enough. As they love what they are doing and how well they are succeeding, student often develop a wanting to put more and more work into their playing. For all students I try to incorporate all elements of music by including appropriate amounts music history and theory into my lessons. For beginners, I tend to utilize Trevor Wye exercises, and slowly incorporate small musical pieces. Although tedious, I believe that scales and etudes make students technically and musically proficient. I therefore include them in my lessons, but ensure the students are gaining the benefit of these exercises. I like to approach lessons from a wholistic standpoint, putting an emphasis on a student's posture, breathing and attitude. Read More

Above all else, music is supposed to be fun. I want my students to be excited about learning new things each week. Music is also a collaborative practice, so I think it is important for the student and the teacher to play together in a supportive environment to help reaffirm the week's lesson. I understand that each student is different, and weekly assignments will be given accordingly. This will require a reasonable weekly goal so that students can see their progress and feel good about their accomplishments, inspiring them to continue playing and learning. Fostering the interest in music into a passion within my students is the ideal teaching situation. This is why I place importance on listening to the student's goals to make decisions for certain parts of the curriculum. There are technical and theoretical skills that must be learned, but the students have some choices in materials. Meeting them where they want to be is some of the strongest motivation I can provide for my students. Read More

My teaching style focuses on a student's strengths and successes. Any time a student has an "a ha!" moment, we stop and dissect what exactly happened. Perhaps the student used a new lip placement or air angle? We talk about this and figure out what they did to improve. Next, I encourage that same type of change in other aspects of their playing. I believe you cannot get better at an instrument by focusing on what you do wrong. Read More
