When teaching such a specialized topic as the flute, I cater to specific needs of that particular student by bringing out their strengths and providing consistent and genuine positive reinforcement. I use method books such as Trevor Wye, Rubank, and Anderson etudes, depending on the level of the student. In addition to those, I also provide some of my own materials such as scales, fingering charts, and pieces. For older and/or more advanced students, I like to create a balance of tone warm ups, scale work, etudes, and musical rep. I encourage students to bring pieces they are interested in learning into their lessons. If a student is also interested in non-classical music (e.g. Disney tunes, Celtic music, pop, jazz, etc.), I find music in those genres at their playing level for them to enjoy. In each lesson the student and myself work to make goals for them to accomplish every week and discuss discuss the ways they might be able to go about accomplishing the goals. Sometimes I will make audio recordings of a student to track progress. For a student to sit and really listen to the improvemnets they have made I find to be one of my best teaching tools.
