Hi there! Im Matt H., a guitar and piano teacher in Watertown, Massachusetts. I was mostly self-taught growing up, playing around on instruments and making music on my computer, before formally studying music at Bennington College where I focused on composition and earned scholarships as a top music student. Since then Ive played guitar, piano, and even a little mandolin in various bands and projects in the Boston area. After a few years I started to focus more on teaching while starting a family and spending some time as a stay-at-home dad. Read More

I prefer to do half-hour lessons for beginners and young musicians. After more lessons can be prepared, forty-five minute or hour long lessons are more appropriate. For trumpet students, I rely heavily on the Arban method for the essentials and then add other materials depending on the student's goals. For voice students, I begin with a vocal exercise book and a collection of songs to learn. For all my students, I encourage you to bring in your own materials to work on as well. Read More

What works for a 5 year old child, doesn't work for an autistic child. I’m flexible in my teaching, some students prefer classical music more than others. Im willing to try a new music style; if one loves a piece one will practice it in addition to the given piece that develops his(her) finger technique, dynamics, phrasing, articulation, so children can perform a song rather than simply reproduce notes. Instruments: Piano Saxophone Music
My teaching style revolves from teaching the music, not just the instrument. As a result, even if the student eventually becomes technically unavailable, he/she can still listen to great musical details and appreciate the sound world with depth and understanding. I expect my students to learn more on their own than from myself because I teach the way to learn in addition to the way to play. Students shall express their goals in the short, medium, and long term. Read More

I hope all my students will become well-known instrumentalists in the future, but I set realistic weekly goals for my students. I design the curriculum according to the student's level and progress, and I highly encourage daily practice even though it could be a challenge. Acknowledging the progress and accomplishments while pointing out the places to improve on will help and motivate students to learn more. I will be able to tailor my instruction to students' pace and needs after the first two weeks of the private lesson. Read More

I am a passionate and motivated instructor who loves working with students and sharing my love of music. In 2004, I graduated from Hartford University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance. In 2006, I graduated from Manhattan School of Music with a Masters degree in Piano Performance. Performing all over the world has been one of the greater experiences of my life as a musician, and I've had the opportunity to play both at the Zinc Bar in New York, as well as touring the East Coast as several performances as the pianist in the Artie Shaw and Cab Calloway Orchestras.
