My work and musical groups have been featured in publications such as The New Yorker, Okayplayer, Afropunk, and many more. Throughout this time, I have also worked as an educator at a number of public and private schools, as well as music schools, in a variety of capacities: as a general music teacher, a choral director, a private drum, bass, guitar, and vocal instructor, a songwriting and production teacher, and more. Depending on the level of the student and what they are looking to achieve through the lessons I would use a few different methods. I like to use guitar books if at all possible for beginners because its a great place to start. The fundamentals are where you have to start to build a scaffolding and practice books are great for doing this. I also like to use songs and tunes as a way of teaching different concepts. Read More

My methods for teaching are directly linked to the desires of the student and what they hope to achieve by learning how to play an instrument. If a student is particularly interested in songwriting and composition, I'd be more inclined to emphasize the principles or harmony, counterpoint, structure and written music, whereas if a student is more interested in becoming an instrumentalist for a band etc., I'd be more inclined to emphasize rudiments, scale exercises and a jamming mentality. I strongly believe that everyone is very different. Learning styles and musical goals are very much a part of this. Some find reading from a book helps them, so for most students I begin by recommending "A Modern Method For Guitar" from the Berklee Press, however for others a book is not as helpful as listening to some music and watching someone play. I like to introduce as much theory as is desired from the student because theory is a very important part of the musical process, but if the student prefers to get playing first and understand the “why” later then we can work something out in that regard. Depending on musical interest, we can work with different genre's and pieces to promote specific techniques and practice routines. Read More

Because I have gained so much in terms of amazing experiences from playing, writing, recording and performing music, I want to pass that passion on to those who are interested in learning music, and an instrument, themselves. I am very plan-oriented, knowing that students learn differently and progress at their own pace. In following the structure of a plan for learning, I build in some opportunities for students to experiment with what has been learned, in a way that other students have found to be fun, so that a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of the instrument, and musical structure, are gained by the student. I started teaching during my last two years at Berklee. I discovered that I actually preferred teaching over gigging. So, after graduating, I started working as a full-time guitar instructor at Mars Music in the Dallas area. When they went out of business I took over most of the students and started working on my own. Over the years I have worked for a variety of music schools as well as privately. Read More

Are you interested in learning to play the guitar and want an enjoyable experience that will get you playing songs quickly and with a lot of joy? As a self taught player I have struggled with the how/when/what to practice and finally decided why I was learning to play the guitar. My personal goal is to always improve, but the main reason I play the guitar is for the sheer enjoyment of it as well as producing sounds/songs that I find enjoyable (and if listeners enjoy it that is just a bonus).
