Scales improve finger dexterity and teach the students about moving up and down the fretboard of a guitar. Learning basic chords is crucial for learning most modern day music. When a new student comes in for their first lesson, I always make sure that they have a grasp of the fundamentals. Without the fundamentals it is very easy to develop poor technique that will at best limit them in what can be accomplished on the instrument, and at worst lead to pain or injury from playing.
