While attending Berklee, I had countless one-on-one and small group sessions with fellow drummers where we would bounce ideas off one another and give each other "mini lessons," breaking down specific grooves and licks. In October, 2014, I led an hour-long master class for other Berklee percussion students about advanced polyrhythmic concepts and applications. I have been teaching music since 2005. I started as an in home music instructor, providing guitar, bass and piano lessons to people of all ages in their homes. As my teaching experience grew, I've added drums and ensemble/group lessons to my repertoire. My lessons are very structured, but within the structure is a lot of freedom. An hour long lesson might look something like this: First 10 min.: Warm-ups, discussion about posture, hand position and muscular/skeletal health while playing. Next 10 min.: Performance of previous weeks assignments, with discussion about whether preparation was adequate, what was missed (usually dynamics and other articulations) and what could be done to improve. I strongly believe that everyone is very different.  Learning styles and musical goals are very much a part of this.  Some find reading from a book helps them, so for most students I begin by recommending "A Modern Method For Guitar" from the Berklee Press, however for others a book is not as helpful as listening to some music and watching someone play.  I like to introduce as much theory as is desired from the student because theory is a very important part of the musical process, but if the student prefers to get playing first and understand the “why” later then we can work something out in that regard.  Depending on musical interest, we can work with different genre's and pieces to promote specific techniques and practice routines. A class once or twice a week is beneficial I believe for keeping up the continuity of practice. We will work on first the guitar as an instrument, basic chords, chord structures, some basic scales, and over time making chord changes happen as the minds memory/muscle memory for remembering chords grows!
