Will doesn't believe to just pointing to a page in a drum book and telling a student to 'play this'. Instead, the 'page in the book' is a tool utilized to springboard into other topics, and vise versa. All students will learn basic music theory as it applies to the drumset, basic rudiments, stickings, hand technique/grip, foot technique, improvisation, etc. Ultimately, Will enjoys seeing the student taking any sort of interest in general, and while there's a lot one can learn, it's more important to him that the student is enjoying the time spent at the instrument, discovering their own interests with the instrument, and tapping into their creative side via the instrument! Everyone is different. Some students learn faster by using their ears and some by reading. Both of these skills are clearly important but one will always be weaker. As far as drumming goes, I believe in the same tenets that were taught to me; start with the basics and core and work your way up. For drums that means rudiments, stick technique and snare basics (books like "Stick Control" -George Stone). But lessons are not a slow grind that maybe one day build up to a full drum set. I was taught (and teach) in a way which mainly focuses first on these essentials (reading, technique etc.), but also incorporates the rest of the drum-set and playing along with other instruments and music. My methods vary. For piano, we start with simple technique exercises to make sure a student is making every note count. For younger students- like 6 and under- we'll nickname everything to make it easier. An example- the fingers should always be curled when playing piano, not flat. There should be enough space under their palm to hold hold a golf ball, so when they are playing with flat hands, I'll say 'golf ball' to remind them of the correct way, instead of being 'that mean old lady' type. My collaboration with Reut Regev spans over a decade long, and throughout the years we have worked intensively in Duo, Trio, Quartet and Quintet formats, playing original compositions and covers.
