I have been teaching since I was 18 towards the end of High School. I taught lessons part time through college and since graduating college have maintained a steady roster of students. I focus on getting to know and understand each student and their goals to customize lesson plans for that individual, all while covering the essential and important fundamentals. Since then Ive taught at Westminster Choir College, Rutgers University, NJ State and County Teen Arts Programs as well as private and group lessons in my own studio. Patience. I have taught children as young as 5 to adults nearing their 50's and the one universal approach I take with all of them is taking every day as a step forward. I am never aggressive with my students. I believe in pushing them to the next level but never through negativity. I like to give the students the tools to become their own teachers. As their private teacher, my goals are threefold: firstly, to help them build an understanding of the fundamentals of their instrument, including relevant techniques, posture, etc. Secondly, to help them build an understanding of musical concepts and of musicianship in general, including melody, harmony, rhythm, basic theory, etc. Thirdly, to help them cultivate a vibrant practice and playing program, including optimizing fun while practicing otherwise dry material, scaffolding their learning to extrapolate on what they already know, and giving them the tools to improve and develop with or without a teacher. For beginner students Ill usually start with George Lawrences Stick Control and Ted Reeds Syncopation. Once I know they have a grasp of the fundamentals, Ill usually see what their interests are or what they are working on personally and help them improve and build upon those things. This could be repertoire for school or auditions or simply a song they have been trying to learn for a while. My teaching style is based on providing the student with as many "light bulb" moments as possible. These moments of goals being realized are the achievements which drive students to excel and are imperative to their confidence. Students who feel stuck or unmotivated are rarely in this position as a result of limited resources, but rather the feeling of accomplishment which is the result of great effort.
