I was also a section leader at Cresskill High School, where I led, trained, and directed the drumline. I wanted to be able to assist and encourage my students to be able to play drums and vibes or marimba. Teaching mallet instruments to drum set students allowed me to help the student see why he or she played certain drum set grooves and fills at certain points. For beginner students, I like to use the Faber books or the Thompson method for piano. I also encourage students of all ages to share what they enjoy listening to and incorporate songs they enjoy as early as possible. As students progress I get into more in depth concepts in music theory and improvisation, to provide a foundation in the language of contemporary music. I learned a lot from the dozens of teachers I took private lesons with growing up. In 2010 I was a counselor for a music camp in Upstate New York. I worked with young kids and helped teach them pop/classic songs. I've had a Diaspora class in college on teaching drumset to beginngers. I set very attainable goals that all students of any age can reach, while always adding a little more.
