I set clear expectations of the student in every lesson, working with them to identify a goal that is within their reach. Through consistent positive reinforcement, patience, and encouragement I help students through any issues they may be encountering. In finding objectives that are within the student's interest levels, this allows for a motivating experience that keeps the lessons fun and engaging. Read More

I have a deep love for music, and one of the ways that I express that is through teaching! I primarily teach drums and percussion, which has been my main focus since 2011 when I entered high school. From there, I began a path that led me to Millersville University and NYU, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Business Technology and a Master of Music degree in Percussion Studies respectively. My experience has run the gamut. I have taught youngsters, and adults alike. My strategy is to find out where the students passions lie, musically and personally. I then incorporate a protocol of sorts, that caters to each individual's passions.both behind the drums and in front. I gain a great deal of pleasure from seeing the hearing the student conquer a challenge, and I strive to make my students and colleagues in the industry, LIFELONG students students and colleagues. My teaching system is directly related to the student's proficiency level in combination with their musical goals. When it comes to entry level learning, I believe that music is a language, and as such it is very important to develop the ear (call and response, ear Training methods), along with the theory (Technique) in the most organic and natural way. In the other side of the spectrum at the advanced level, I like to personalize the material as well as the musical literature based on the topics, concepts and interests that the student is trying to achieve. This is my basic approach for getting a new student started at the drums. I like to start students out on the practice pad at first. This gives them a chance to focus on learning good technique and understanding basic musical notation. Starting out on a huge drumset is not only a little overwhelming, but there is only so much they can accomplish until they grasp the basics. Below is a general list of the things that will be covered in the first month or so for a newcomer to the drums. -Proper technical approach (grip, hand/ arm position, stroke) -Musical notation, note values (basic reading- quarter notes, eighth notes, triplets, rests, etc.) -Rolls (double stroke, single stroke, press) -Rudiments (flams, paradiddles, etc.) -Accents -Snare Drum Solos Various instructional books are used including- “Syncopation”, “Stick Control”, “Modern Reading, text in 4/4”, “Wilcoxin Book”, and more. I am incredibly fortunate to have access to the resources at NYU and to love teaching music more and more every day: I have had practical experience in woodwind, brass, string, voice, and percussion pedagogy, as well as music in early childhood and for students of all abilities. My teachers include Jason Noble (instrumental conducting), Paul Speiser (choral conducting), Kim McCord (childhood/special ed music pedagogy), Ethan Hein (electronic music pedagogy), and Christopher Bush (clarinet performance). We begin by playing simply and slowly on the snare drum, focusing on stickings, control, dynamics, technique and mechanics, move the rhythms around the kit in common patterns, add bass drum and sometimes HiHat support. Meanwhile, common rock/funk/pop grooves are introduced and combined with the rhythmic exercises to achieve fluidity to playing rock repertoire. The same process is used with Triplet meter as jazz and blues styles are developed, then with world music contexts, Bossa Nova, Samba, Baiao, etc. Read More
