With students learning or continuing education on the piano, like to start with the basics. Once the student begins to have a grasp for that i begin to introduce reading music and theory. I also like to prepare the student to play any genre of music by sheet music or by ear as well. No matter what skill level, the fundamentals are always the same: practice, patience, and practice some more. But the key is patience. For beginner students, patience will be vital for overcoming the independence element of controlling both hands and feet. For intermediate students, patience will be needed to advance their technique with practicing rudiments. I love to watch a student progress. It gives me such joy to see them happy. I always evaluate every student and I set for them small and realistic goals. I explain to them that in order to achieve a certain goal you must first obtain the facility by practicing the exercises assigned to them. Sometimes its hard for small children to understand why they are doing a certain exercise so I explain to them and show what the drummer is doing on a certain performance they want to emulate and in order to achieve that, they must go through the exercises assigned. I always enjoy seeing the light bulb moment my students get when they get something right, and learn something new. My teaching method is a simple stacking method we start with a lesson, I try to find where the student may struggle most and spend time with that. Then we move forward, but revisit the lesson prior for continuity. For my methods of teaching, I work on rudiments and work on basics for percussion. Even if the student has played percussion for years, I still want them to understand the fundementals for the instrument. As soon as the student is finished with rudiments, I want them to look at the different etudes in a percussion book that I will work off of for each meeting. As far as materials go, I am hoping that the student will have drumsticks and a practice pad. Read More
