As an educator, I strive to provide my students with the tools that they will need to explore the direction that they want to take with their instrument. This can include from enjoying drumming as a hobby, performing in small jazz ensembles, recording electronic and acoustic drums in major recording studios, to performing with a full orchestra! Here in New York, I have been teaching privately as well as writing various articles to drum magazines such as Modern Drummer Magazine, Drum! and recently I have a column in Drumhead Magazine called Brazilian Beat. For beginning students, I typically start with the method book that the child is given by the school Music teacher, making certain that they are at least adequately prepared to play their assigned studies (or pages) for their school Music lesson. I also incorporate playing the Duets provided in that volume, along with the students. I then suggest that they purchase other necessary methods, duets and solos at their local Music Store(s), as they progress, and they will therefore require more advanced Musical materials than that used at their school. I also provide instruction regarding the actual hardware involved in drumming, drum placement, tuning, and other technicalities, because I have found that students will sometimes blame themselves for the drums (and the sounds they are producing) sounding bad when in reality the drums are simply not tuned or placed optimally. For my piano students who are children I like using Piano Adventures for beginners and advanced beginners,since it's offering multiple books for each subject and level(lessonbook,performance book,etc.).For more grown up ones or adults students I like using Alfred's methods,for example x22Adult All-In-One Course.Alfred's methods offer a variety of books, focusing on different needs according to the class set up.For drums I use Alfred's as well in conjunction with more speficic books such as Stick Control and Syncopation.
