For younger students with no sight reading experience, I will typically start of with Ted Reed's book Syncopation. This book starts the student off with a very basic music notation vocabulary. This vocabulary is often quickly absorbed so that the student may proceed to more complicated musical words or phrases. I began by tutoring my fellow students during college. Little by little, I realized that I was becoming more passionate about seeing the students progress and achieve the goals they set for themselves. There is almost no greater feeling than accomplishing a goal, and even though I always acknowledge and encourage students on their accomplishments, I believe there's always another step to take, another skill to master. In 2011-2013 I was a teaching assistant at UC Irvine in 2011-2013 for the subjects of Music Appreciation, Fundamentals, History of Jazz, and Music of The Beatles - of which I lectured, graded, and tutored.
