Growing up my teachers always created an environment where the students can be creative and inspired. They nurtured us and helped mold us into to who we are today. As time went by I wanted to pass down what they instilled in me and be apart of the wave of teachers. I first began teaching at Neighborhood Music School's Summer Jazz Camp 8 years ago. My drum teacher selected me and other students to be mentors for the younger musicians. Read More

My Teaching experience really started just after graduating high school working with my School's marching band. Although this was not an official position until more recently, my time volunteering surrounded me with successful educators who I observed and learned from. A more recent teaching experience for myself was teaching the University of Maine's (Orono) marching band and percussion section. For one week I worked closely with the a group of 15 students developing skills in percussion while teaching material to be played at school football games. Read More

My methods of Teaching are simple; Teach according to the knowledge, experience, and ability of the student. Anything can be accomplished! The way I teach is a simple A, B, C method, by spelling out the best learning styles for an unsocial student, and a group of students. Lessons vary from beginner lessons of simple reading, to expert lessons of how to apply fills, patterns, chops, and time signature differences. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 20 years ago, and have been consistently teaching high school band and percussion for the last 15 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the instrument and motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More

My methods used for piano students are the Randall and Nancy Faber teaching books; they are among the very best teaching materials due to their ease of comprehension, their logical sequence of concepts taught, and also their practical exercises and songs for the student. My methods used for Band instruments (trumpet, clarinet, flute, drums, and trombone), are the Standard of Excellence books, as they are also among the very best in regards to explaining musical concepts, presenting new songs, and logical progression. With students of any age, I consider it my number one priority to create a learning environment that is both encouraging of their growth and passion for music, and supportive/safe for them to take the risks and meet the challenges necessary for that growth. I always work to maintain a dialogue with students about their interests and ensuring that our work includes and stimulates those interests, while also finding ways to make our work on fundamental techniques and building blocks as engaging and fun as possible. My approach to teaching is to try and understand each students level of musicianship and evaluate their weaknesses and strengths. I believe that repetition and the reduction of speed are essential for learning, mastering and remembering technique and the nuances of music. I encourage each student to explore the style or genre of music that is most appealing to them. As well as experiment and persevere through new challenges of unfamiliar works or styles, such as classical, jazz, African and Latin/Cuban. Read More
