My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 20 years ago, and have been consistently teaching high school band and percussion for the last 15 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. We start with the basics like how to hold the drum sticks, how to read music, and how to start playing some simple basic beats. Then things become more tailored to the specific drumming needs. For example, if you are trying to learn the drums for a jazz ensemble, we can practice jazz songs together. A New York native and life-long professional drummer, I played Dvorak at Carnegie Hall, punk and ska music at CBGB's and classic rock at Wetlands in NYC all during high school. After furthering my studies in percussion performance at Berklee College of Music in Boston, I founded progressive jazz quartet Schleigho, hit the road in 1991 and toured nationally until 2004 , releasing 5 CD's and playing over 3000 shows with the likes of jazz great John Scofield, funk legend Maceo Parker and rock icons The Allman Bothers Band, who signed them in 1998 to their record label, Flying Frog Records. He has also toured the U.S. including Northwest tours with pianist, Clay Giberson, a summer jazz series at The Baltimore Museum of Art with Grammy Award winner, Vincent Herring’s Quartet, midwest shows with fusion, master bassist, Percy Jones and West Coast tours with the prolific pianist and composer, Joel Forrester.
 Forrester, who was recently featured in Downbeat Magazine, composed the theme for National Public Radio's "FRESH AIR" with Terry Gross and is also a founding member of The Microscopic Septet. Read More

I help my younger students prepare for middle school and high school level orchestra, and my older students for college music auditions and solo pieces.
