Over the years, my students have consistently placed high in the Western Region Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Orchestra, and several of them have gone on to the extremely competitive Connecticut All-State Band, Jazz Ensemble, and Orchestra. With this in mind, each person's lesson is subjective and progresses according to the student's learning style; a beginning 5 yr old student's lesson will look much different that a beginning 14 yr old student's lesson. My teaching takes the form of private lessons on flute, clarinet, and saxophone, and courses at NYU. In each educational situation, I aim to establish clear goals and assignments, build confidence through positive reinforcement, and explain concepts in an engaging manner appropriate to each student. I enjoy teaching students with diverse learning goals and strengths and learning about the unique ways every student connects with music intellectually and emotionally. For beginning students, I like to start them on the Hal Leonard Essential Elements. I believe it moves at the proper pacing for young children. For intermediate students, Accent on Achievement works well because I find the music is more challenging. Also I require older students to know scales, primarily Bb, Eb, and F major being that they are the easiest to learn. It is from there that I gradually add a new scale (one every few weeks) until ultimately all 12 major scales are learned. Read More

My methods are very creative and different for each students, depending on what the student wants to learn. I have a notebook for each student to keep track of how the student is progressing. I love to keep the lessons engaging and fun, sometimes I like playing duets or just sight read for fun. I take a different approach with each student based on their learning needs and goals. The student and I (and parent when appropriate) will regularly speak about their goals and aspirations, as well as discuss both long- and short-term plans. All students will study scales, intervallic leaps, and learn base-level physics about the clarinet and its partials.
