When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. With adult musicians, I let them guide me to their area of interest, and I capitalize on that to guide them to better musicianship, no matter what their skill level may be. Read More

I put a large emphasis both on sight-reading and learning to play by ear; I believe these are the most important two skills any musician can have, whether he be an amateur, professional, or somewhere in between (yes, there's an in-between!). I like to focus on whatever a student has coming up for an audition or a solo & ensemble festival. I use the Rubank Method for beginning, intermediate, and advanced clarinet and Saxophone. This series emphasizes the simple concepts to the advanced fundamentals, i.e. rhythm, articulation, breath support, fingerings. The lesson plans are incorporated in the Rubank Method with an easy progression through the fundamental starting with whole notes, half notes, quarter notes and simple to complex rhythms.
