Instruments: Guitar Saxophone Flute Clarinet
My teaching style is very relaxed and I like to make it fun for you as well as interesting. I set goals for you to learn at a pace you are comtrable with. I want to inspire you to have the passion I have for music and know it stays with you for a lifetime. If my schedule below has times you need and I did not mark, I am willing to work around mine if I can, just ask. Read More

My lessons are structured with attention paid to the fundamentals of each instrument and the fundamentals of music. I have learned that when a student practices a mistake over and over it remains a mistake. I immediately slow the student down and concentrate on just a measure or even two notes to accomplish correct rhythm, fingerings, articulations and phrasing. When the student can successfully play a passage correctly then the work turns into fun music making. Read More

I put a large emphasis both on sight-reading and learning to play by ear; I believe these are the most important two skills any musician can have, whether he be an amateur, professional, or somewhere in between (yes, there's an in-between!). I like to focus on whatever a student has coming up for an audition or a solo & ensemble festival. If I can help players have a great experience soloing in public or help them win an audition to play with a great band (and I have a very good track record with my students winning auditions), they'll be more motivated. I am a southern California retired music teacher. I graduated with a double major in music from South Dakota State University. I taught instrumental music in public and private schools for the last 36 years. I have also owned and operated my own piano studio. I am married and have three boys. I'm active in church music and I also frequently accompany music students for recitals and rehearsals including school musicals. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to when I was an undergraduate. I began giving private lessons to younger college and high school students. Since then I have consistently taught students privatly either at my studio, at their home, or at a school. While obtaining my Masters degree at the University of Northern Colorado I was a teaching assistant and got hands on teaching experience with big bands and small jazz combos. Read More

For beginning improvisers, I rely solely on my own materials and exercises, which emphasize the bebop scale and short ii-V licks and help develop understanding of key centers and 7-3 resolutions. For intermediate students as well, these concepts are essential to development as an improviser. For saxophonists, I begin with scalar studies and stress the importance of tone developing exercises such as overtones and long tones, but quickly introduce manageable repetoire. Read More

When taking on beginner students, I typically use a blend of method books and novice musical pieces to begin to build musicianship. With intermediate musicians, I tend to seek out anything of interet to the student while incorporating harder repertoire to strengthen musicianship and to continue to peek interest in music. With adult musicians, I let them guide me to their area of interest, and I capitalize on that to guide them to better musicianship, no matter what their skill level may be. Read More
