I am a recent graduate from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. My main reason for relocating to the Chicago area has been to join multiple orchestras and ensembles. I have traveled all over the world performing and giving recitals including performances at Merkin Hall in New York, Millenium Park and Symphony Center in Chicago, Bela Bartok Hall in Budapest, Hungary, as well as performances in Pyongchang, South Korea, home of the 2018 Winter Olympics. More than anything else, I try to grow a love for the cello and music, because without a passion, lessons can be a drag (trust me, I know!). I try to incorporate some of the student's other interests into the lessons, ie. pop music, art, even science! I began my teaching career back in 2014, teaching cello to children from aged 3 -12. I love the challenge of teaching young students how to focus and concentrate, and I am always in awe of a child's ability to use creative problem solving. In private lessons, through the assignment of scales, arpeggios, technical exercises, etudes, and solo work, students gain a progressive yet sound understanding of technique. Students develop an internal map of the fingerboard, learn how to accurately and consistently arrive in positions, have the flexibility of creating their own a fingerings, understand the fundamentals of sound production, bowing styles, and how to use these techniques as an aid to music making. It depends on the student's age and level of skill, however, I like to focus on building a good rapport with a student while learning and cementing the essentials of cello playing: having a good posture, holding the bow, reading, etc. I prefer to have a process that is somewhat slow in the beginning and that gradually picks up as the student becomes more acquainted with the cello. If a new student already knows the basic things, I still like to do a quick brush up to see what bad habits need to be fixed and how we can move forward in the most productive way. Read More
