My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 6 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students since then. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! I strive to find an individual approach to each student and it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. While daily practice is necessary for quicker progress, not every student has the time for it. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with the Suzuki Method and the Sassmannshaus Early Start books. As they grasp the beginning fundamentals, I incorporate the Alfred "My First Theory Book" series. As the students advance, we begin using Martin's "I Can Read Music," Rick Mooney's "Position Pieces for Cello" and "Fun in Thumb Position." I use String Builder, Essential Elements, etudes, technical studies for each instrument and Suzuki Methods for strings and essential elements for clarinet. I emphasize good posture, holding the instrument and bow properly and correct finger placement. Also learning to play scales and music to prepare for auditions and a recital. I also teach students music theory and sight reading and assist with orchestral music. When anyone first meets me, I think they will notice that I am a very energetic, outgoing, and positive person and teacher which I believe directly translates to my teaching style. I am very patient with my students, but I also push my students to achieve their greatest aspirations--whether that is merely to play a scale or to play a concerto!
