Originally from Anaheim, CA, I've been living in New York City for the past six years while completing my Bachelor and Master's degrees at The Juilliard School. I love exploring new creative ways to use the cello, and have taken influences from all sorts of musical genres, from pop to EDM to bluegrass. Sarah is also a passionate chamber musician, and in December 2016 her piano trio made its Carnegie Hall debut in Weill Recital Hall. In recital, notable performances include concerts at the Bohemian National Hall, The Frick Collection, Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, Ernst C. Stiefel Concert Hall, Church of the Holy Trinity, and the Hungarian House. For very beginning students, I usually start with the Suzuki Method Books and All For Strings Comprehensive String Method Books. I usually encourage my students to read music, but for the youngest students I start by playing with them and having them copy me. Once they are ready, I start teaching them basic music theory that will help them read music. For intermediate to advanced players I institute a routine of practicing scales and etudes as well as a solo piece that is appropriate for their ability level. Read More

I have extensive experience as a private teacher (25+ years). I teach cello, violin/viola, and piano and have taught students ages 5-65. I also have prepared students for specialized middle school and high school auditions, pre-college programs, and other auditions. In addition to private teaching, currently, I teach group string classes in Harmony Program NYC. Since I play the piano I'm often the accompanist for my students' recitals. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I love cultivating an environment for young ones that both excites them and keeps them learning as much material as possible from the get-go. Young students are incredibly smart and spongey and I love learning from my own students the growth and knowledge that is actually possible to cultivate in young students. One of the keys to learning a musical instrument well is patience and comfort. So regardless of age or experience, I begin with scales. As the famous cellist Paul Tortelier said, "Scales are the language of music." Once there is a solid grasp on this fundamental, I progress to teaching simple etudes, and at the same time solo pieces within the student's ability. Read More
