Overview:
MY name is Oded and I am an Israeli Cellist currently living in NYC. I started playing the cello when I was 4 after watching a video of Yo-Yo Ma perform Elgar Cello Concerto, which made me fall in-love with the sound of the cello. I began my studies in Suzuki method and soon moved to study at a music conservatory in my own town Kfar-Saba, Israel. I then graduated from both a Bachelors and Masters degree in Cello Performance and have been performing around the world as a chamber musician and a soloist ever since, playing in major recital halls such as Carnegie Hall, Avery Fischer Hall, and Tel-Aviv Museum. My teaching experience involves teaching in a music conservatory in Israel for two years and having a private studio. I have taught people at all levels and ages. There is nothing I enjoy more than passing my passion to music, specifically to the cello, on to others while sharing from my experience and watching my students develop their technical skills and musicianship
EXPERIENCE
My journey as a cello teacher began when I was asked by my teacher to assist him with a few college level students who were in the same cello class as me during my BA studies in Tel-Aviv University. I then discovered my passion for teaching people how to improve their technical skills in order to be able to express themselves musically. After graduating from New-England Conservatory in Boston I returned to Israel with the goal of developing my teaching skills and improving as a music mentor and cello professor. I taught in Hod-Hasharon Conservatory of Music for two years and had a private studio, teaching kids, adolescents, and adults from all ages in private and group settings. My goal as a teacher is to pass my love for music to my students. I believe that the only way a student can improve is through an enjoyable and rewarding practicing experience, while receiving the right mentorship and maintaining a strong and positive teacher-student relationship.
METHODS USED
For beginner students I usually start with teaching the fundamentals of how to hold the cello and bow and how to make a sound, using Pizzicato and bow movement. I then introduce the Suzuki volume 1-4 books and make sure that the student learns a piece that will help him or her improve the most but at the same time will ensure an enjoyable and successful learning experience. For intermediate and advanced students I usually get familiarized with the student's skill level during the first lesson and build an individual curriculum for each student that will involve pieces the student loves and wants to play, pieces that will challenge the student, and pieces that will help the student reach his or her goals as a cellist and musician
LESSON STYLE
I believe that each person has a unique set of skills and characteristics through which he or she acquires knowledge, maintains and improves the acquired knowledge, and uses it to his or her benefit. Therefore, although I do have a system that I follow, I attend to the specific strong and weak points of each student. My goal is to be present in each and every lesson and to focus on each student's current level with the understanding that only through direct and personal guidance could my students improve and thrive. I maintain my goal as a teacher through an open dialogue with the student and constant emphasis on practice skills that will ensure a successful practice experience at home.
