For beginners, I always reincorporate very crucial skills to possess with constant repetition (i.e.: intonation, posture, bow technique, finger positioning). On top of this, I build on rhythm. Many times, parts of my lessons include simply clapping, so that students get a grasp for rhythm and constantly improve upon it. In terms of classical training, for me, knowing the "feeling" of the piece is key. By building upon this feeling, I introduce different styles and different techniques that the student can learn. For adolescent beginner piano students I recommend 'John Thompson's Earliest Piano Course'. In this series Books I-III build a strong base upon which a student can specialize in different genre and styles graduating from book III. For adult students beginning I would suggest John Thompon's Adult (or Modern) Piano Course. The pacing of this book is far more accelerated and more in keeping with an adult pace to work with. Some students are naturals at imitating what they hear, so we play to those strengths. Other students are more comfortable with structure and math, so we take that route instead.
